- John served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990.
- He returned to law for a brief period in 1996. He argued the case of a railroad worker who was killed when he was pinned between two rail cars. He won the family $683,500 -- it was the biggest verdict of his career.
- He wrote his first novel, A Time To Kill, in the wee hours of the morning before leaving for his regular job each day. It took him three years to complete.
